Starting in a school-based setting can feel complicated and overwhelming.
And it's no wonder.
Because...
Most graduate programs spend very little time teaching to school-based therapy.
Onboarding processes and new employee orientation at school districts are not geared toward therapists.
States differ on their interpretations of special education legislation, making it hard to find clear expectations.
Too many school-based therapists are overwhelmed and uncertain about their role.
You've tried to plan ahead. You've asked the right questions and looked for resources to help you feel prepared.
But, there's so much information out there. And it feels like everywhere you look you see a different response.
At the end of the day, you have more questions than answers.
It's really hard to be excited about work and provide the best services to students when you're in this spot, right?
Imagine 6-weeks of guidance to start your school-based career strong with:
A clear understanding of the educational model
A framework for clinical decision-making in schools
Practical guidance for applying your knowledge in real school situations
This is not a template-driven course. You won't walk away with stacks of pre-made handouts because school-based practice cannot be mastered through templates.
Instead, you'll build the thinking skills and foundational understanding you need to:
Understand student needs within an educational context
Make informed decisions about service delivery
Collaborate more effectively with school teams
Navigate your role with clarity instead of confusion
Long-term confidence and success in schools comes from understanding and applying your clinical knowledge to an educational model.

Each session will focus on a different topic highly relevant to school-based practice, with plenty of real-world examples and application through discussion.
All sessions are recorded and available for replay during the duration of the program.

Between sessions you'll have access to submit questions and receive guided feedback to ensure you're able to apply what you're learning to your daily work.
Give it time. You'll learn as you go. You'll figure it out...
But, here's the challenge:
Most therapists were never taught how school-based practice actually works.
Graduate programs do prepare us to be therapists, but often provide little guidance on navigating an educational model, understanding school-based decision-making, or balancing district expectations with our professional responsibilities.
As a result, every new situation can feel like you're scrambling to put the pieces together.
You catch yourself second-guessing and questioning every decision, but you can't quite put your finger on why.
It's not that you need another year or two, or five, of experience.
You need the right lens to make decisions aligned with best practices and the school system.
The Confident School-Based Therapist is designed to help you build the foundation you need to understand how school-based practice works, where your role fits within the educational model, and how to make decisions that benefit you and your students.

Hi, I'm Jennifer Huff.
Several years ago I found myself transitioning to schools from the outpatient world of occupational therapy. Though I was fortunate to have wonderful team members to help orient me to the school setting, I struggled to confidently understand my role in the school setting.
I thought I had finally figured schools out, but then a move across the country made me realize just how much variation there can be in schools.
As I sought answers and guidance, I kept finding opinions, not facts (and contradictory ones at that!).
I saw how many other practitioners were struggling with the same concern and frustrations.
Determined to improve my processes and build capacity to be a better therapist, I spent hours researching and learning.
After experiencing the relief and increased confidence that came from studying reputable and well-grounded information about schools, I knew I needed to provide resources and support to empower other school-based practitioners on this journey.
You don't have to figure it out on your own.

This program is designed for therapists new to the school setting (0-2 years experience). This experience is not a resource library or template-based course. Templates have a time and place, but through this program you'll build the foundation you need to:
Understand principles that guide school-based practice
Confidently make informed decisions, without second-guessing yourself
Develop a framework to think critically to make decisions grounded in educational model
This program is about building a solid foundation so that you can apply your knowledge to the variety of situations that school setting is bound to throw your way.
You're in your first 0-2 years of school-based practice.
You're transitioning from another setting into schools.
You understand therapy, but feel unsure about how school-based decisions are made.
You're frequently second-guessing yourself.
You're looking for guidance, not just another collection of handouts and templates.
You want a stronger foundation so you can make informed decisions as new situations arise.
You're primarily looking for treatment activities or intervention materials.
You want someone to provide a script or exact answer for every situation.
You already feel highly confident navigating school-based systems, recommendations, and team collaboration.
No. While the program is led by an occupational therapist and examples may draw from OT practice, the content focuses on foundational concepts that apply across school-based related services.
This program was designed with both occupational and physical therapists in mind, but many of the concepts may also be valuable for other service providers who are new to the educational setting.
This program is designed with you in mind! Flexibility is of utmost importance.
For the duration of the program, you'll have access to a Google Form that allows you to direct questions to me at anytime. At least once per a week, I'll be responding to these. Responses will be emailed to you, and you can select if you'd prefer a response through text or video format.
Live sessions will occur once per a week. At the end of each live there will be some time for case study application and Q&A. Can't make it on live? The recording will be sent out after.
You'll receive access to the recording of the session.
When the program starts, you'll have access to a Google Form. You can submit this form anytime, and multiple times, throughout the course of the program!
At least once a week, I'll be responding to each submission. Responses will be delivered via email - you can select if you'd prefer to read a text-based response or a video response.
This program will help you prepare to be a confident school-based therapist. Whether you just accepted a job in schools, have spent a little time in schools already, or are just interested in making a change, this program will help you develop a solid foundation to apply to school-based practice.
Absolutely! If you are questioning and second-guessing your decisions and school-based practice, this program is designed to help you develop a strong framework to confidently operate in an educational setting.
Sorry, this program is not currently pre-approved for CEUs. Certificates of attendance will be issued upon request for participation in live sessions (please note, certificates will only be offered for attendance in the live session and are not able to be provided for watching the recording). Refer to your state guidelines to determine if certificates of attendance may be accepted as continuing education hours where you work.
The Confident School-Based Therapist provides guided support designed specifically for those new to the school-based setting.
This program focuses on building a solid foundation for decision-making by developing a deeper understanding of the educational model, your role within it, and how to navigate the many situations that arise in school.
The 6-week program not only allows opportunities to ask questions during weekly live sessions, but you'll be able to submit questions throughout the week. You'll learn how the pieces fit together so you can make informed decisions, navigate your district's systems more effectively, and feel less like you're constantly reacting to the unexpected.
A strong foundation won't eliminate every challenge that comes your way, but it will help you approach those challenges with greater clarity, purpose, and confidence.
The primary focus of this program is helping you develop the understanding and decision-making skills needed for effective school-based practice.
While examples and practical applications will be discussed throughout the program, the goal is not to provide a collection of templates. Instead, you'll build a stronger foundation for understanding how school-based decisions are made so you can confidently navigate situations as they arise.
Most therapists enter schools believing they need more experience, but what they often need first is a framework for understanding how school-based practice works.

I've experienced all the frustrations that come with being a school-based occupational therapist.
Though we have significant training in the medical model, in the school setting we need to comfortable and confidently operate under the educational model.
My confidence as a school-based OT didn't come overnight. I have navigated through challenges, poured through research, and put the work in - I want my hard work to save you some time!
Whether it's through this program or a course, my hope is that the resources I provide equip and empower you, allowing you to thrive in your role as a school-based practitioner.
